UFC President Dana White has his hands full when it comes to the future of the heavyweight division. Francis Ngannou wants a new contract with very specific terms and Jon Jones has been teasing a move to the division for almost a decade.
All signs point to Jon Jones moving to heavyweight with the former UFC champion bulking up and training at Fight Ready in Arizona. Dana White says the situation is more complicated than that.
“I don’t feel confident saying that Jon Jones is next,” the UFC President told ESPN. (via MMAJunkie) Not because I think he’s unreliable, it’s because I honestly don’t know what Jon Jones wants to do next.
“I think Jon’s going to watch this fight, and he’ll decide. Maybe he doesn’t fight at heavyweight. Maybe he goes back and tries to regain the light heavyweight championship. I honestly don’t know the answer to that question.
“After everything plays out on Saturday – there’s just so much going into this fight – it’s all part of the drama, though. It’s what makes this weekend so fun.”
It’s not clear what exactly the plan is for Jon Jones once he makes his long-awaited return to the UFC. Dana White seems reluctant to have him at heavyweight and many wonder if he’ll return to light heavyweight.
The aftermath of UFC 270 should reveal what exactly is next for Jon Jones and who he might fight. The talk lately has been a fight with Ciryl Gane should he become the heavyweight champion on Saturday.
